Leeds Tykes are proud to announce that Tom Collins is our Club Captain. The 25-year-old has re-signed for the season. He has been with the club since signing after training with the squad during the Ventur Cup in early 2021. Tom gained a MSc after studying at Leeds Beckett University for 5 years.
Tom usually plays as a flanker in the back row. He can also play in the second row and at number 8. He led the side 6 times during the 2022/23 season, appearing in all 23 matches and has made 50 appearances for the club.
On being named Club Captain, Tom said: “When I was growing up leadership was all about shouting at the boys. I’m the opposite of that. I adapt my style to people as I get to know them as players and individuals.
We asked Tom two questions:
- Leadership style: “I say actions speak louder than words. I tend to lead from the front with my actions. When I speak to the boys, it will be with a quiet word where someone needs it and words of encouragement and guidance where extra help might be needed.”
- Role model: “When I started playing rugby, I was a Fly-Half and Full Back. As such, Jonny Wilkinson was a role model for his energy, passion and commitment to excellence.
“As I developed as a forward, Richie McCaw’s pure passion for the sport, his leadership and impact on the pitch was something I admire.”
Pete Seabourne, Director of Rugby, said: “The choice of Tom as club captain, was an easy decision. He has all the qualities you look for as a captain, leadership and communication being at the forefront.
“He will be a good addition to the management group, and we look forward to watching Tom grow into the role.”
